12. Jesus dies on the Cross
Knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
One of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.

John 19:28–30, 34

Lord, you hang victorious on the cross — your race is won. Your body is given to us as food and blood quenches our spiritual thirst. We are brought to you by the prayers and service of others. Priests show us the way. Let us pray for S Francis who brought us to the foot of your cross. Let us pray for all priests. Come, let us worship.
