The Stations of the Cross

Fr Neil Chatfield
Fr Neil writes...
When Fr Phillip tragically died in March 1999, the Parish immediately started receiving donations in his memory. After a great deal of prayer and discussion, the Parochial Church Council decided to renew the Stations of Cross previously given in memory of Mary Grey Skinner, which had suffered in the seaside environment. This was particularly appropriate as Fr Phillip’s last act in church was to lead a meditation on the Stations.

We approached local artist Beverley Barr and commissioned a set of iconic paintings depicting the traditional events from Christ’s condemnation by Pilate through to his crucifixion and triumphant Resurrection on the first Easter Day.

Fr Phillip encouraged a devotion to Mary, Jesus’ mother, and the paintings include a traditional Pietà, capturing Mary’s sorrow at the death of her Son.

Please take a moment as you view each Station to read the passage of Scripture here and meditate on Christ’s suffering for the whole of mankind. Do continue to meditate on Jesus’ giving of himself, with the readings printed here. Humanity is saved from sin and given eternal life. It is the most wonderful event in history. On to the stations...
