Parish of Christ Church, Eastbourne THE EUCHARIST Common Worship Order One Advent ¶ A Form of Preparation Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Collect for Purity Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Prayer of Humble Access Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. Our hands are unclean, our hearts are unprepared; we are not fit even to eat the crumbs from under your table. But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, and share your bread with sinners. So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, that he may live in us and we in him; and that we with the whole company of Christ, may sit and eat in your kingdom. Amen. ¶ Welcome to Christ Church the Parish Church of Seaside. This Order of Service uses the text of Common Worship, published in November 2000. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. All Amen. Lord, have mercy. A minister uses an invitation to confession, for example When the Lord comes, he will bring to light things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of our hearts. Therefore in the light of Christ let us confess our sins. All Almighty God, long-suffering and of great goodness: I confess to you, I confess with my whole heart my neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments, my wrong doing, thinking and speaking; the hurts I have done to others; and the good I have left undone. O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you, and raise me to newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The president prays over a vessel of water Lord God almighty, creator of all life, of body and soul, accept this water; as we use it in faith, recalling our baptism, forgive our sins and save us from the power of evil. Lord, in your mercy give us living water, always springing up as a fountain of salvation: free us, body and soul, from all that may harm us, and welcome us into your presence in purity of heart. Grant this through Christ our Lord. All Amen. During the singing of the Kyrie, the president and people are sprinkled with the water. Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven: By the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of Intercession One of these responses is used Lord, in your mercy All hear our prayer. (or) Lord, hear us. All Lord, graciously hear us. When remembering the dead the response is Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord All and let light perpetual shine upon them. And at the end Let us join our prayers with Mary ... saying All Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. ¶ The Liturgy of the Sacrament The Peace Stand. The president introduces the Peace using these or similar words: In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. and then says The peace of the Lord be always with you All and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. All exchange a sign of peace. Preparation of the Table Taking of the Bread and Wine A hymn is sung. The gifts of the people may be gathered and presented. All Blessed be God for ever. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us the cup of salvation. All Blessed be God for ever. Pray, my brothers and sisters, that this my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. All May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his Church. The president may say an additional prayer over the gifts. The Eucharistic Prayer The president says The Lord be with you All and also with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. Blessed are you, Lord God of truth, for by the breath of your mouth you have spoken your word, and all things have come into being. You fashioned us in your image and placed us in the garden of life. Though we turned away and chose the path of death and rebellion you have not abandoned your own. Time after time you drew us into your covenant of grace. You gave your people the law and taught us by your prophets to look for your reign of justice, mercy and peace. As we watch for the signs of your kingdom on earth, we echo the song of the angels in heaven, evermore praising you and saying: All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord God, you are the most holy one, enthroned in splendour and light; in the coming of your Son Jesus Christ you have revealed the power of your perfect love in our human weakness. Being born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus embraced our humanity, and showed us the way of salvation; loving us to the end, he gave himself to death, even death on the cross; dying for his own, he set us free from the bonds of sin, that we might rise and reign with him in glory. On the night before he died he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Praise to you, Lord Jesus: All Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life: Lord Jesus, come in glory. As we recall the one, perfect sacrifice of our redemption, Father, by your Holy Spirit let these gifts of your creation become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; form us into the likeness of Christ and make us a perfect offering in your sight. Look with favour on your people and in your mercy hear the cry of our hearts. Bless the earth, heal the sick, let the oppressed go free and fill your Church with power from on high. We pray for ... Gather your people from the ends of the earth to feast with Mary, the mother of Christ our God, [N] and all your saints at the table in your kingdom, where the new creation is brought to perfection in Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. All Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The president breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. The Agnus Dei is sung as the bread is broken All Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
