Parish of Christ Church, Eastbourne THE EUCHARIST Common Worship Order One Eastertide ¶ A Form of Preparation Easter Sequence Christians, to the Paschal Victim offer your thankful praises! A Lamb the sheep redeemeth: Christ, who only is sinless, reconcileth sinners to the Father. Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous: the Prince of Life, who died, reigns immortal. Say, Mary, declaring, what thou sawest wayfaring: “The tomb of Christ, who is living, the glory of Jesu’s Resurrection: bright angels attesting, the shroud and grave-clothes resting. Yea, Christ my hope is arisen: to Galilee he goes before you.” Happy they who hear the witness, Mary’s word believing above tales of doubt and deceiving. Christ indeed from death is risen, Our new life obtaining. Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning! Amen. Alleluia! Prayer of Humble Access Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. Our hands are unclean, our hearts are unprepared; we are not fit even to eat the crumbs from under your table. But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, and share your bread with sinners. So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, that he may live in us and we in him; and that we with the whole company of Christ, may sit and eat in your kingdom. Amen. Anima Christi Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesu, hear me. Within your wounds hide me. Suffer me not to be separated from you. From the malicious enemy defend me. In the hour of my death call me and bid me come to you, that with your saints I may praise you for ever and ever. Amen. ¶ Welcome to Christ Church the Parish Church of Seaside. All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven: By the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of Intercession One of these responses is used Lord, in your mercy All hear our prayer. (or) Lord, hear us. All Lord, graciously hear us. When remembering the dead the response is Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord All and let light perpetual shine upon them. And at the end Let us join our prayers with Mary ... saying All Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. ¶ The Liturgy of the Sacrament The Peace Stand. The president introduces the Peace using these or similar words: The risen Lord came and stood among the disciples and said, ‘Peace be with you’. Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. Alleluia. He then says The peace of the Lord be always with you All and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. All exchange a sign of peace. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Kneel as the Prayer continues Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Jesus Christ is Lord: All Lord, by your cross and resurrection You have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we offer you this life-giving bread and saving cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of Mary, the virgin Mother of God and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The president breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. A communion sentence is said and the people receive. During the distribution hymns, chants and anthems may be sung. Prayer after Communion Silence is kept. The president says a prayer of thanksgiving and then all say this Post Communion prayer together. All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which through word and sacrament we share in his victory over death. As we await the risen Christ, let us hear the record of God’s saving deeds in history, recalling how he saved his people in ages past and in the fullness of time sent his Son to be our Redeemer; and let us pray that through this Easter celebration God may bring to perfection in each of us the saving work he has begun. ¶ The Liturgy of the Word Readings A number of readings from the ancient Scriptures follow. At the end of each the reader may say This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. Each reading is followed by a psalm and a prayer. ¶ The Service of Light Blessing of New Fire Fire is made and blessed. The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right that with full hearts and minds and voices we should praise you, the unseen God, the Father almighty, and your only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who has ransomed us by his death, and paid for us the price of Adam’s sin. For this is the Passover of that true Lamb of God, by whose blood the homes of all the faithful are hallowed and protected. This is the night when of old you saved our fathers, delivering the people of Israel from their slavery, and leading them dry-shod through the sea. This is the night when Jesus Christ vanquished hell and rose triumphant from the grave. This is the night when all who believe in him are freed from sin and restored to grace and holiness. Most blessed of all nights, when wickedness is put to flight and sin is washed away, lost innocence regained, and mourning turned to joy. Night truly blessed, when heaven is wedded to earth and all creation reconciled to God! Therefore, heavenly Father, in the joy of this night, accept our sacrifice of praise, your Church’s solemn offering; and grant that this Easter candle may make our darkness light; for Christ the Morning Star has risen, never again to set, and is alive and reigns for ever and ever. All Amen. ¶ The Mass of Easter Night The Altar candles are lighted, bells are rung, and the Gloria is sung. Gloria in Excelsis All Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect The president introduces a period of silent prayer with the words “Let us pray” or a more specific bidding. Lord God, you have brightened this night with the radiance of the risen Christ. Father, you give us grace through sacramental signs, which tell us of the wonders of your unseen power. In baptism we use your gift of water, which you have made a rich symbol of the grace you give us in this sacrament. At the very dawn of creation your Spirit breathed on the waters, making them the well-spring of all holiness. The waters of the great flood you made a sign of the waters of baptism, that make an end of sin and a new beginning of goodness. Through the waters of the Red Sea you led Israel out of slavery, to be an image of God’s holy people, set free from sin by baptism. In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptised by John and anointed with the Spirit. Your Son willed that water and blood should flow from his side as he hung on the cross. After his resurrection he told his disciples: “Go out and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Father, look now with love upon your Church, and unseal for her the fountain of baptism. He stretches his hand over the font. By the power of the Spirit, give to the water of this font the grace of your Son. You created man in your own likeness: cleanse him from sin in a new birth of innocence by water and the Spirit. He lowers the candle three times into the water, saying We ask you, Father, with your Son to send the Holy Spirit upon the waters of this font. He holds the candle in the water May all who are buried with Christ in the death of baptism rise also with him to newness of life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. All Amen. Renewal of Baptismal Promises The president says to all present As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead, we remember that through the paschal mystery we have died and been buried with him in baptism, so that we may rise with him to a new life within the family of his Church. Now that we have completed our observance of Lent, we renew the promises made at our baptism, affirming our allegiance to Christ, and our rejection of all that is evil. Therefore I ask: Do you reject Satan? All I do. And all his works? All I do. And all his empty promises? All I do. Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth? All I do. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father? All I do. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting? All I do. The president concludes God, the all-powerful Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, has given us a new birth by water and the Spirit, and forgiven us all our sins. May he also keep us faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ for ever and ever. All Amen. Following the ceremonies at the Font, all return to their places and the Mass continues with the Intercessions on page seven.
