Parish of Christ Church, Eastbourne THE EUCHARIST Common Worship Order One Holy Week ¶ A Form of Preparation Good Jesus, too late have I loved you, never yet have I wholly followed you; make me now at last wholly to love you, and from the fullness of your infinite love give all the love I might have had, if I had always loved you. Dearest Lord, too late have I loved you, too late have I loved you; it will always be too late, for I have not always wholly loved you. Even now, I cannot love you as I want. O dearest Lord, you are love; give me of your own love, that with it I may wholly love you. Collect for Purity Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Prayer of Humble Access Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. Our hands are unclean, our hearts are unprepared; we are not fit even to eat the crumbs from under your table. But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, and share your bread with sinners. So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, that he may live in us and we in him; and that we with the whole company of Christ, may sit and eat in your kingdom. Amen. Anima Christi Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesu, hear me. Within your wounds hide me. Suffer me not to be separated from you. From the malicious enemy defend me. In the hour of my death call me and bid me come to you, that with your saints I may praise you for ever and ever. Amen. ¶ Welcome to Christ Church the Parish Church of Seaside. Today we come together to begin this solemn celebration in union with the Church throughout the world. Christ enters his own city to complete his work as our Saviour, to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us go with him in faith and love, so that, united with him in his sufferings, we may share his risen life. The people hold up their palms while this prayer is said. God our Saviour, whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die, let these palms be for us signs of his victory; and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. The raised palms are sprinkled in silence. Gospel Reading Stand, and turn to face the gospeller. An acclamation heralds the Gospel reading. The Collect The president introduces a period of silent prayer with the words “Let us pray” or a more specific bidding. The Collect is the special Prayer of the Day. Almighty and everlasting God, who in your tender love towards the human race sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross: grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. ¶ The Liturgy of the Word Readings Two readings from Scripture precede the Gospel reading. At the end of each the reader may say This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven: By the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of Intercession One of these responses is used Lord, in your mercy All hear our prayer. (or) Lord, hear us. All Lord, graciously hear us. Again he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my Blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Christ is the Bread of Life: All When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. In memory of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup. We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. All It is right to give thanks and praise. A Preface proper to the day is used. It is indeed right to give you thanks and praise, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. For on this night he girded himself with a towel, and taking the form of a servant, washed the feet of his disciples. He gave us a new commandment that we should love one another as he loved us. Knowing that his hour had come, in his great mercy he instituted these mysteries, that we, redeemed by his death and restored to life by his resurrection, might be partakers of his divine nature. Therefore with angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name forever praising you and singing: All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Kneel as the Prayer continues Lord, you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Amen. ¶ Transfer of the Holy Eucharist The Blessed Sacrament is taken in procession. Kneel as the Sacrament reaches the Altar of Repose. A reading from the Gospels may be read, before the ministers depart to strip the altars. During the stripping of the altars, psalm 22 may be recited. “They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.” My God, my God, look upon me; why hast thou forsaken me: and art so far from my health and from the word of my complaint? O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not: and in the night-season also I take no rest. And thou continuest holy: O thou worship of Israel. Our fathers hoped in thee: they trusted in thee and thou didst deliver them. They called upon thee and were holpen: they put their trust in thee and were not confounded. But as for me, I am a worm and no man: a very scorn of men, and the outcast of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out their lips, and shake their heads, saying, He trusted in God that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, if he will have him. But thou art he that took me out of my mother’s womb: thou wast my hope, when I hanged yet upon my mother’s breasts. I have been left unto thee ever since I was born: thou art my God, even from my mother’s womb. O go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand: and there is none to help me. Many oxen are come about me: fat bulls of Basan close me in on every side. They gape upon me with their mouths: as it were a ramping and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart also in the midst of my body is even like melting wax. My strength is dried up like a pot-shard, and my tongue cleaveth to my gums: and thou shalt bring me into the dust of death. For many dogs are come about me: and the council of the wicked layeth siege against me. They pierced my hands and my feet; I may tell all my bones: they stand staring and looking upon me. They part my garments among them: and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O Lord: thou art my succour, haste thee to help me. Deliver my soul from the sword: my darling from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion’s mouth: thou hast heard me also from among the horns of the unicorns. I will declare thy Name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. O praise the Lord, ye that fear him: magnify him, all ye of the seed of Jacob, and fear him, all ye seed of Israel. For he hath not despised nor abhorred the low estate of the poor: he hath not hid his face from him, but when he called unto him he heard him. My praise is of thee in the great congregation: my vows will I perform in the sight of them that fear him. The poor shall eat, and be satisfied: they that seek after the Lord shall praise him; your heart shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember themselves, and be turned unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before him. For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he is the Governor among the people. All such as be fat upon earth: have eaten, and worshipped. All they that go down into the dust shall kneel before him: and no man hath quickened his own soul. My seed shall serve him: they shall be counted unto the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and the heavens shall declare his righteousness: unto a people that shall be born, whom the Lord hath made. The Vigil before the Sacrament continues until midnight. Good Friday: Solemn Liturgy of Our Lord's Passion ¶ The Gathering The priests and ministers enter and go to the altar. Kneel as they prostrate themselves. Stand when they rise. Lord, by the suffering of Christ your Son you have saved us all from the death we inherited from sinful Adam. By the law of nature we have borne the likeness of his manhood. May the sanctifying power of grace help us to put on the likeness of our Lord in heaven, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. All Amen. ¶ The Liturgy of the Word Readings Two readings from Scripture precede the Gospel reading. At the end of each the reader may say This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. The psalm follows the first reading. The Passion Gospel Stand, and turn to face the gospeller. An acclamation heralds the Gospel reading. The Passion is announced simply, without a response. At the end, the narrator says This is the Passion of the Lord. General Intercession Each of the petitions is introduced, and after a period of silent prayer, summed up in a collect. The intercessions follow this order: - For the Church - For the Pope and Christian leaders - For the clergy and laity of the Church - For those preparing for baptism - For the unity of Christians - For the Jewish people - For those who do not believe in Christ - For those who do not believe in God - For all in public office - For those in special need ¶ The Veneration of the Cross The cross is shown to the people three times, each time the priest saying Behold the wood of the cross, on which hung the Saviour of the world. All Come, let us worship. After each response, all kneel and venerate the cross briefly in silence. The cross and candles are placed at the entrance to the sanctuary, and clergy and people approach to venerate the cross, by a simple bow, genuflexion or some other sign of reverence. Hymns and anthems may be sung. ¶ The Holy Communion The altar is prepared. Stand as the Blessed Sacrament is brought from its overnight place of repose. The president says Let us pray with confidence to the Father in the words our Saviour gave us: All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. The president continues alone: Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. All For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Giving of Communion The president says this invitation to communion Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. All Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Communion in one kind is distributed. During the administration, hymns and anthems may be sung. Prayer after Communion Silence is kept. The president says this prayer of thanksgiving Almighty and eternal God, you have restored us to life by the triumphant death and resurrection of Christ. Continue this healing work within us. May we who participate in this mystery never cease to serve you. He then blesses the people Lord, send down your abundant blessing upon your people who have devoutly recalled the death of your Son in the sure hope of the resurrection. Grant them pardon; bring them comfort. May their faith grow stronger and their eternal salvation be assured. All Amen. All depart in silence.
