Parish of Christ Church, Eastbourne THE EUCHARIST Common Worship Order One Traditional Language ¶ A Form of Preparation Summary of the Law Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Collect for Purity Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. ¶ Welcome to Christ Church, the Parish Church of Seaside. This Order of Service follows the normative text of Common Worship, published during August 2000. On Sundays and principal feasts the Collect (Prayer of the Day) and the readings will be found on the news-sheet which accompanies this booklet. Please take the news-sheet away with you for use during the week. Please do not take this booklet away. ¶ Structure of the Mass The people and the priest ¶ greet each other in the Lord’s name ¶ confess their sins and are assured of God’s forgiveness ¶ keep silence and pray a Collect ¶ proclaim and respond to the word of God ¶ pray for the Church and the world ¶ exchange the Peace ¶ prepare the table ¶ pray the Eucharistic Prayer ¶ break the bread ¶ receive communion ¶ depart with God’s blessing ¶ The Gathering The president says In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen. The Greeting The president greets the people Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you All and with thy spirit. Words of welcome are said. Prayers of Penitence A minister uses an invitation to confession, for example Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all the world. All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against thee and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are heartily sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve thee in newness of life to the glory of thy name. Amen. The Kyrie is said Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. All Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. All Lord, have mercy. The president gives absolution saying Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. Gloria in Excelsis The Gloria is said, except during Advent and Lent. All Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ: O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art the Most High, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect The president introduces a period of silent prayer with the words “Let us pray” or a more specific bidding. The Collect is the special Prayer of the Day, and all respond All Amen. ¶ The Liturgy of the Word Readings Either one or two readings from Scripture precede the Gospel reading. At the end of each the reader may say This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. If there be a psalm, it follows the first reading. Gospel Reading Stand, and turn to face the gospeller. An acclamation heralds the Gospel reading. When the Gospel is announced the reader says Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N. All Glory be to thee, O Lord. At the end This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise be to thee, O Christ. Sermon The Creed Stand. The Creed is the corporate Statement of the Faith of the Church. All I believe in one God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of Intercession One of these responses is used Lord, in thy mercy All hear our prayer. (or) Lord, hear us. All Lord, graciously hear us. When remembering the dead the response is Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord All and let light perpetual shine upon them. And at the end Let us join our prayers with Mary ... saying All Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. ¶ The Liturgy of the Sacrament The Peace Stand. The president introduces the Peace using these or similar words: “Where two or three are gathered together in my name,” says the Lord, “there am I in the midst of them.” and then says The peace of the Lord be always with you All and with thy spirit. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. All exchange a sign of peace. Preparation of the Table Taking of the Bread and Wine The gifts of the people may be gathered and presented. The Altar is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it. The president takes the bread and wine. Blessed art thou, Lord God of all creation: through thy goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. All Blessed be God for ever. Blessed art thou, Lord God of all creation: through thy goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us the cup of salvation. All Blessed be God for ever. Pray, my brothers and sisters, that this my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. All May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his Church. The president may say an additional prayer over the gifts. The Eucharistic Prayer The president says The Lord be with you All and with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is meet and right so to do. It is very meet, right and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ thine only Son our Lord. The following may be omitted if a short Proper Preface is used For he is thy living Word; through him thou hast created all things from the beginning, and fashioned us in thine own image. Through him thou didst redeem us from the slavery of sin, giving him to be born of a woman, to die upon the cross, and to rise again for us. Through him thou hast made us a people for thine own possession, exalting him to thy right hand on high, and sending forth through him thy holy and life-giving Spirit. Short Proper Preface, when appropriate Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name, evermore praising thee and saying: All Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of thy Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be unto us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to thee, he gave it to them, saying: Drink ye all of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of his kingdom and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ thy Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: All Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. The Prayer continues Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of thy divine majesty, renew us by thy Holy Spirit, inspire us with thy love, and unite us in the body of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father almighty, world without end. All Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The president breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. The Agnus Dei is sung as the bread is broken All O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. Giving of Communion The president says this invitation to communion Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. All Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed. Prayer of Humble Access This prayer may be said. All We do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But thou art the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The president receives communion. A communion sentence is said and the people receive. Prayer after Communion Silence is kept. The Priest says a prayer of thanksgiving and then all say this Post Communion prayer together. All Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen. ¶ The Dismissal The Priest says a prayer of blessing over the people and all respond saying; All Amen. A minister says The Mass has ended. Go in the peace of Christ. All Thanks be to God.
