Lunchtime Recitals: Summer 2006
David Grundy: 23 August
Programme
David Grundy was born in Lancashire, educated in Yorkshire and studied Piano, Organ and Composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Patrick Cory (Piano), Dr. Eric H. Thiman (Composition) and Douglas Hawkridge (Organ), from where, after a two-year interruption for National Service, he emerged with a Bachelor of Music degree (London University) and diplomas for organ and piano. From 1957 to 1960, he held organist posts at S Mary’s, Islington and at All Souls’, Langham Place W1. He then obtained a Music Teachers’ Certificate at the London University Institute of Education. A subsequent teaching career took him to posts in Kent and Oxfordshire, until he and his family moved to Shropshire in 1971. Since 1976, he has held posts in Shrewsbury, the most recent being Head of Music at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College, from which he retired in 1996. He was Conductor of Shrewsbury Choral Society from 1974–2001 and Conductor of Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra from 1982 until 2005. He leads a full and active life as organist, pianist and composer. Some of his music is published by Feather Books, settings of poems and religious lyrics by his friend and ex-colleague, the Rev John Waddington-Feather. Two recent additions to the Feather Books list are Seasons and Occasions, a collection of hymns and songs in various styles, and Hymns from the Classics, which are settings of hymns and songs based on themes from Classical Music. In 1987, he published his account of the History of the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, The Glorious Experiment (1947–55), an attempt at the municipal sponsorship of Classical Music, played by a full-time, professional symphony orchestra. He and his wife Judy moved to Eastbourne in November 2005. |
